KiHS – Our History

History of KiHS

Keewaytinook Internet High School began in 1999 at the request of Keewaytinook Okimakanak (Northern Chiefs Tribal Council.) The Chiefs of KO were responding to a need from parents and students to allow young people to receive high school education without having to leave their home communities. KiHS began as a pilot project for grade 9 students. In the first few years, only a handful of applied junior level courses were offered to a small number of communities, but over the next decade and more, KiHS has grown to include partnerships with 16 communities.

Course offerings range from grade 9 to grade 12, in all streams (locally developed, applied, academic, workplace, college, or university preparation), and in all subject areas (English, math, science, native language, arts, technology, business, co-op, phys ed, humanities, Canadian and World studies). If you are interested in any of these areas, come to KIHS and see what the future has in store for you.

Future with KiHS

KiHS is moving in a very positive direction as we plan and develop courses to meet the needs of the students we are working with in terms of academic programming, mature student assessments, special education and many more. KiHS is into its 22nd year of operation and the success has been continuing in the positive direction since the start. With KiHS it is not just possible to obtain your OSSD, but also possible to gain the requirements to enter many jobs in the workforce and many college and university programs. Not many schools in northwestern Ontario can make the same claim. Our dedicated teachers are with your students every day in your communities, helping to guide them through towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma and to the opportunities that await them in the future.

If you have any questions about our program or about how to host a KiHS classroom in your community, or if you would like to take courses from us, please feel free to contact the office at any time or drop in to one of our community classrooms if there is one where you live. KiHS may be just the place to fit your needs.
